The idea of making my own cleaning supplies has always appealed to this self declared tree-hugger -- but to be honest it was always something on my "someday" list. When I saw this post on SouleMama.com, where the Soule Mama herself, Amanda, said how simple the laundry powder was to make, on top of using Dr. Bronner's Peppermint?! Well! I couldn't wait until my commercial brand jug was empty.
DIY LAUNDRY POWDER
- 1 cup Borax
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup washing soda (ash)
- 2 cups (finely) grated Castile soap*
Though I'm sure you can find what you need at your local grocery / department store. I got all the fixin's from Amazon, it was just easier for me. To be honest I wasn't even sure I knew what washing soda was. They even sold a combo Borax and washing soda here.. Of course since it was in bulk on Amazon I'm going to be able to make laundry soap for months and months. Plus, I was happy to throw one of the SIX bars of peppermint soap that got delivered in the shower.
The only thing I tweaked from SouleMama.com was that I found just *ONE bar of castille soap produced the two cups necessary. I LOVE Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap, though (unfortunately) if you've tried the liquid it's not quite as potent. There are lots of other scents out there - you don't even have to be confined to Dr. Bronner's. I have been using 1/8 cup of this mix per load and have had absolutely no trouble or problems. Everything seems to dissolve, etc. I'm quite pleased with this much more economical option!
